WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO IF MONEY WERE NO OBJECT?

What would you like to do if money were no object?

From the late Alan Watts

‘Remember. Money is not the goal. Money is the tool that you use to get to your actual goal. If you don’t have an actual goal then what are you doing?’

He asked us to ask ourselves:

What sort of a situation would you like to have in your life?
What makes you tick?
What would you like to do if money were no object?

How would you really enjoy spending your life?

I’ve thought about these questions often lately and I’ve made a conscious choice to do more of what I love. At age 55 I realized I am not a spring chicken and I don’t have all the ‘time in the world’ like I used to feel I did.

When you finally answer these questions he said to just

DO THAT!!

and forget the money — because if you say that getting the money is the most important thing you will spend your life completely wasting your time.

‘You’ll be dong things you don’t like doing

in order to

go on living

that is to go on doing things

you don’t like doing …

which is — stupid!’

‘Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing. than a long life spent in a miserable way.’

I do love this and believe it to be true.

He goes on to say,

‘After all if you do really like what you’re doing, it doesn’t matter what it is — you can eventually become a master of it. The only way to become a master at something — is to be really good at it…then you’ll be able to get a fee for whatever it is.’

Don’t worry too much.

Somebody is interested in everything. Everything you can be interested in you can find others that are interested in, but its stupid doing things you don’t like doing.

The Opposing View

The naysayers feel this might be a hipppie pollyanna view of life and that we MUST do stuff we don’t like in order to pay bills, be a ‘proper’ human being etc.

This was one response to Alan Watts theory:

‘The only problem is that many of the things I enjoy doing, DO require money. It’s not stupid to invest a few years of working something you don’t enjoy in order to get a house or something you’ve always wanted. If everyone had the philosophy that work must be enjoyable then we wouldn’t have plumbers, electricians, janitors etc.’

It is an interesting debate. What are your thought on this?
