F*CK OFF, I’M WRITING!!

F*CK OFF, I’M WRITING!! About a year ago I got kicked out of an online memoir writing group for saying that ‘…sometimes I use the F-word in my writing if it’s appropriate’. I was told by the moderator: ‘…Only writers who don’t have a good use of vocabulary have to resort to profanity to get their point across’… Resort to profanity? I never said I resorted to it. I said ‘I’d use it if it were appropriate.’ I was then asked to refrain from that kind of language in the group or I’d be banned from the group. HUH?? Banned? From a writing group? For using a word? Isn’t it our 1st Amendment right of free speech? According to Wikipedia “The average person swears 80 times a day” What about all the many Classic books in literature? (Some are full of profanities in almost every chapter). I also thought about the well-written…

EVEN IF NO ONE READS IT I WILL BLOG EVERY DAY!

EVEN IF NO ONE READS IT I WILL BLOG EVERY DAY! It is my commitment. I talked to my friend Mack today. He’s one of the very few friends of mine who really gets it. He gets why a person writes. He gets why a person needs to write He gets why its important to write every day He gets why its vital to commit to it. I am grateful for his friendship! Mack is one of my friends who also happens to read the same authors that I read — like Steven Pressfield, Brene Brown, Tony Robbins, Liz Gilbert and the wonderful Seth Godin. To me, they all say basically the same thing, in a slightly different way: The only difference between a successful and unsuccessful writer is that one shows up and puts their butt in the chair…no matter what.  Speaking of Seth Godin. He is the one who…

SUNBATHING IN FEBRUARY!

SUNBATHING IN FEBRUARY! WhaaAAaaaaaaAAAat?? From my Journal yesterday: So, Its February 15. I am sitting outside my house… sunbathing!? HUH!? Weeeeeeird weather!! Craziness. I even had the windows open in my car today driving to the store. I was sweating. Sweating in February. Is this a definite sign of Global Warming? Global weirdness. Who knows? I’m not complaining, at all. I love sunshine. I love feeling the sun beating down on me and my face. It’s one of my favorite things in the world. I’ve always loved sun. This sun in Tennessee feels like a different sort of sun than when I lived in Vegas or Tahoe or South Africa or other places. I’ve experienced sunshine in so many places, but still—it’s the same healing vibe. Feeling the suns rays seep into me and my brain always gives me a vibe that ‘All is well’. Today as I sit here outside…

COULD YOU LIVE IN ONE ROOM?

COULD YOU LIVE IN ONE ROOM? The TINY HOUSE craze has been in the news a lot lately. I’ve thought about what a cool idea it is. I realized that I really don’t need a lot of room. I don’t need or want a lot of ‘stuff’ either. Could I live in a tiny room? I think I could… well maybe not THIS TINY but if I had a comfy bed, a place to write, a computer, my books, and a  small kitchen —-oh, and a place for my cats I’d be good to go. I’m very used to living in hotel rooms anyway and very small spaces. I’ve lived on people’s couches from Denver to Reno, to New York when I was a struggling singer in between gigs in my 20s and 30s. Many people took me in I recall.  There was a married couple in Reno who I met…

INSTANT FAME as a writer?

INSTANT FAME as a writer? I’ve been thinking a lot about this question lately. Would I  want instant fame as a writer? NAH! I really don’t think I would. I am enjoying writing what I want to write! I really prefer writing in all different styles and subjects from poetry to short stories, essays, blogs, books, to memoir. I am loving the freedom of exploring ‘being a writer’. Also by writing every day (showing up at the page),  I know I am finding my writer’s voice. Who the heck  KNOWS where my blog writing is leading, where it will all end up — but guess what? I am enjoying the process not focusing on the destination. Oh, also writing is fun. I feel like I am in writing school all by myself now. I am the sole student and sole teacher. Haha. I am learning a lot daily and it…

‘TAKE YOUR BROKEN HEART AND TURN IT INTO ART’

‘TAKE YOUR BROKEN HEART AND TURN IT INTO ART.’ MERYL STREEP ended a recent speech with this quote by the late Carrie Fisher. I like it. I think it is a very appropriate statement, especially in these times with so many people seemingly experiencing broken hearts. Politics, the world situation, health care issues, joblessness—people definitely have broken hearts lately. No doubt about it. Some people feel the need to go protest and write letters but I think many creative people more than ever feel the need to focus and dedicate to making more art. Make something good out of the craziness. Out of the madness. Out of the uncertainty. Turn their broken heart into art. I’ve always believed this to be true. I am sure there are happy joyfully glee artists who make art merely to express their existential bliss and contentment,  but my guess is that many artists express art from…

CHOCOLATE, VANILLA, STRAWBERRY? I might be the pistachio nut.

CHOCOLATE, VANILLA, STRAWBERRY? I might be the pistachio nut.   This Blog is not about ice cream. It’s about how I feel about Book Reviews. A fellow author and I were talking about this and she said: 1/3 will love it. 1/3 will hate it. 1/3 will be indifferent. This equation could be used for so many other aspects of life, eh? Some people prefer chocolate, hate strawberry and despise vanilla. Others love vanilla and strawberry but dislike chocolate. Some love vanilla but don’t like chocolate or strawberry. Others only eat chocolate. Yadda. Yadda It doesn’t mean any flavor is better than another. BETTER is a subjective word. Ok, so everything is a matter of personal taste. Honestly, I might be the pistachio nut since I might be a bit of a nutty writer.( I might be an acquired taste.) Kerry Lonsdale, Author of the novel Everything We Keep wrote this about Book Reviews: …

THOUGHTS ON WRITERS BLOCK

THOUGHTS on  WRITERS BLOCK   ‘Writing about a writer’s block is better than not writing at all.’ –CHARLES BUKOWSKY “Sometimes writing badly can eventually lead to something better. Not writing at all leads to nothing’. –H.W. ALMAAS Today I was in the bookstore and found this cute book called Writers Block in the shape of a Rubik’s cube. Nifty!  I realized I didn’t have this problem, though. Lately, my issue is an ABUNDANCE OF IDEAS!!  I have soooooo many ideas it’s crazy. I wake up in the middle of the night with an idea and I just HAVE to write it down, which is why I keep a pad of paper near my bed.  Hey, I’ll never run out of stuff to write about because: life is full of ‘stories’. good stuff bad stuff sadness joy confusion excitement grief  social issues Everyrhings a story to me now—which is one reason I love writing so darn…

THROW A BUNCH OF SHIT AGAINST THE WALL… something might stick!

‘THROW A BUNCH OF SHIT AGAINST THE WALL’ something might stick! According to Wikipedia,  the originator of this quotation is the Eighteenth-century French writer, historian, and philosopher Voltaire. (I doubt he used the word shit against the wall, but who knows?) It is also known as ‘throw enough mud at the wall, some of it will stick’, but you get the drift. They also added this definition: ‘Try the same thing (or similar things) often enough, and, even if the general standard is poor, sometimes one will be successful’.   Sixties Pop Artist Andy Warhol similarly said ‘Make a LOT of art’  and best-selling author Liz Gilbert said “Done is better than perfect’ etc. So with this advice in mind, I’ve challenged myself to a new goal for 2017: To write, edit and publish  ONE BLOG A DAY in 2017!  (This blogging concept was already thought of by inspirational author Seth Godin…

In 100 Days we will all be 100 days Older!

We all have one thing in common: In 100 days we will all be 100 days older!   I just got back from the Urgent Care. The doctor said I now have Chronic Bronchitis. It started as Acute Bronchitis but it has now gone into the chronic stage. I got another stronger shot in the butt and four more new prescriptions. Antibiotic, Inhaler Prednisone , and super strong NINJA cough syrup! FUN!! So my 2017  ‘plan’ to go back to music this year is NOT happening—yet. Plans thwarted! Ok. What do you do when your plan gets thwarted? Do you cry, moan, get stagnant, angry, throw a fit, eat a pint of icecream— or do you attempt to move on to another idea? This is what came to me through my recent bout with the ‘cruds’. I can still write without a voice. My fingers can still move. So, I decided to make…
