WE MUST DO THESE THINGS TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST

WE MUST DO  THESE THINGS TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST. That’s what all the experts seem to say.   I researched the subject of ‘how to be a successful artist’ for a book I am writing and SURPRISE. SURPRISE! These 4 things came up every single time — so, I thought Id share them with you. I think all four of these things are things we’ve all heard before but HEY I like redundancy! It’s ok to hammer things in to our skulls sometimes to make our point, so here goes: 1. DAILY WORK Most great artists achieve their goals by putting in the time every single day. Work on your art, creative goal EVERY single day and you WILL become better. ‘Why every single day? Why not just when I have time?’ ‘I mean if I work one hour Monday to Friday why can’t I do 5 hours on Saturday or…

FINGERNAILS, HAIR AND HOPE

FINGERNAILS, HAIR AND HOPE They all grow back.   I’ve bitten my fingernails and cuticles since I was in my teens. After an intense football game or scary movie, I can look down at my hands and all my nails are GONE! I never worry because in a few days they come back so even if they look like a gnarled mess they’ll grow and I can paint them again and my hands can look semi normal. It’s nice to know that they grow back. Recently I gave myself a horrible home hair cut. I was using my boyfriends Home Hair Cutting Kit and accidentally cut one side super short. Ooopseee. ( I used the wrong attachment. The one that scalps you QUICK!). So then I tried to even up the other side so at least they would match! WRONG! Nope. I made it far worse. So then I had to…

SOMETIMES YOU GET THE EXACT OPPOSITE RESULT OF WHAT YOU HOPE FOR.

SOMETIMES YOU GET THE EXACT OPPOSITE RESULT OF WHAT YOU HOPE FOR. This happened after publishing 3 books. So I’ll share something funny with you. The exact opposite happened after I published my 3 books last year. After spending almost a year writing these books I thought that I would feel: More peaceful More connected to others and the world More clear about my life More understood by family and friends More sure of my writing and my life Well, none of those things happened. The exact opposite happened. I felt: More confused More unclear Less connected to others Less sure about my writing life. Haha. WTF?? So, I spent all that time writing those three books thinking that they were a good positive, life-affirming thing. As I was writing them I felt sure that I HAD to share my work. I was also sure that I could not hold my words…

SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HOLDING THEIR BREATH.

SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HOLDING THEIR BREATH. Today is the day we will know whether we still have ObamaCare or not. It seems that many are holding their breath lately, not just about ObamaCare but about a lot of issues. Are we a country of breath holding people? It seems that way. One friend Jackie is holding her breath because her health took an odd unexplained turn and she is baffled by it. She says she doesn’t trust her doctors and she is living in limbo. Another friend Vicki is holding her breath because she has a son with an addiction and feels no control over him. She is holding her breath that he will find help and turn his life around. Another friend Amy is holding her breath because her financial situation is crappy and she has no real answers to what she will do next to support her kids.…

IF YOU’RE BRAVE ENOUGH OFTEN ENOUGH — YOU WILL FALL.

IF YOU’RE BRAVE ENOUGH OFTEN ENOUGH — YOU WILL FALL. Just GET IN THE ARENA! Ilove author Brene Browns work. She is one of the top TedTalk speakers. She wrote many bestselling books like, ‘Rising Strong’, ‘Daring Greatly’ and ‘The Gifts of Imperfection’. She has spent her career researching vulnerability and creativity. I love her wisdom and I try to live by it. She talks about ‘getting in the arena’ often. She says that when you put yourself and your work out there — — that means you are now ‘in the arena’. You are now a brave soul. You are a creative person who is not settling for the sidelines, or being a chicken shit. You are throwing your work out there which is brave. She says if you are a creative person: ‘You are not gonna RISK falling. No. Its GUARANTEED that you WILL fall. Your gonna get hurt.’ If…

ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT THE STATE OF THE ARTS?

ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT THE STATE OF THE ARTS in Donald Trumps administration?   Many people are these days. I know many Americans are concerned about so many other topics (with this new administration) but what about this subject of the Arts being defunded? To me, it’s a big deal. Actress Sally field was being interviewed today on TV and she said: ‘Im so glad I was brought up in a time when the Arts was a focus in schools. Honestly I don’t know what I would’ve done without it’. I wonder… what do kids do these days without art in their school? I know I was never fond of the basic subjects like math and science. ICK! I lived for choir. In a recent study of the Arts in schools, it was found that: ‘Students who study art are 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and 3…

THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS

THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS always moves me So today I just want to share how much the kindness of someone made my day. I am attempting to start a new business venture (a one of a kind Art Shoe business) with literally NO capital. $7 in our account after bills have been paid so not enough to invest eh? but I have this dream of doing my new ARTISTIC SHOES. It feels like I’ve been ‘called’ to it. I have the new website:  www.artisticshoes.com and I’ve been busy making shoes all day for over a week now. There is definitely a learning curve involved when you start doing something new. Teaching myself this new craft is fun but isn’t gonna happen overnight. It will take time to perfect and get proficient at this., but I know I can do it and I will do it. I am a determined creative person:)…

‘PEACEFUL FOR A DAY”

‘PEACEFUL FOR A DAY’ An experiment. I’ve been studying the Enneagram Personality Type system for over 20 years. I love it. I find it amazingly accurate and helpful to find out what our personality tendencies are and to then be able to work on improving ourselves. The Enneagram talks of the 9 personality ‘types’ in the world. Each type is motivated by something else. I happen to be a number Four. “The Individualist’. Type Four in Brief 4 THE INDIVIDUALIST Enneagram Type Four .The Sensitive, Introspective Type: Expressive, Dramatic, Self-Absorbed, and Temperamental Fours are self-aware, sensitive, and reserved. They are emotionally honest, creative, and personal, Key Motivations for type 4 …4s want to express themselves and their individuality, to create and surround themselves with beauty, to maintain certain moods and feelings, to withdraw to protect their self-image, to take care of emotional needs before attending to anything else, to attract a “rescuer…” One of…

THE UPSIDE OF 70

THE UPSIDE OF 70 ‘I’m an American, I have food on the table, a roof over my head and a backyard. I’m the luckiest person on earth.’  I  met this wonderful filmmaker/writer Bob Belinoff on medium.com where I write a daily story. This following story of his inspired me so much that I wrote to him asking if I could interview him for an article or upcoming book. He graciously agreed. (I am working on editing it now but in the meantime, I thought I’d share his article with you in its entirety because I loved it!) I loved his spirit and optimism about being 70!  ENJOY HIS WISDOM! The Upside of Seventy How Brains get Better with Age and my Journey into Art. Is this trip really necessary? What does act three really add to the story? What am I supposed to accomplish in what, on stage at least, is the most exciting act…
